Training News: Training Trends in 2008

2008 is set to be the year of technology in training. Whilst face-to-face training will continue to have support – it will be complemented with a range of technology-based options to increase access and promote reinforcement.
Here are five hot technology training trends for the year:

  • There will be wider use of web conferencing tools to make online training more interactive.
  • Through the use of technology and availability of modeling data, training simulations will be made more realistic.
  • With increases in the availability of broadband and WiFi, and more mobile devices with 3G, there will be continued growth in e-learning and mobile learning (m-learning) within traditional educational institutions as well as in workplaces.
  • With increased bandwidth and the ability to compress video files there will be increased use of video in both e-learning and m-learning.
  • We can also expect to continue seeing a steady rise in enterprise social networking – a kind of “Facebook” or “My Space” for the learning environment.

Training Tip: Remember the Journey

When we make the transition from the student to the trainer, we sometimes forget that the journey is as important as the destination. You are no longer the passenger, you are the driver, but don’t lose sight of what worked for you as a learner, or your students might get off the bus early. Never be afraid of explaining why you are doing things or asking for feedback along the way. If you’re not having fun, then your students are probably not enjoying themselves either. So mix it up and do less teaching to tests and more engaging of learning!

Training Game: 180 Review

This is a new game I tried during the week with great success. The “180” has two meanings. Firstly, a 180° turn would allow the group to look at what had come before them and as such, reflect on the day’s training. As part of this reflection, the trainer could lead a brainstorm on the board of the key topics covered in the day. Next, they should divide the group into smaller teams and give each of the teams one of the brainstormed topics. Tell them they have 180 seconds (3 minutes) to identify the major point or points of the topics. Finally, each group will have a fast and furious three minutes (another 180 seconds) to reveal these points. This activity helps to reinforce the pertinent points of the day and acts as an informal checking for understanding. It is also a quick and interactive way to finish up your day. Good luck!

Next Issue

In the next issue of Yours in Training! we will look at Best Practice assessment tools and review a file-sharing website which could be used by teachers and students for transferring large media files. Until next time, remember that the journey is as important as the destination.
