Training News: Hottest training trends for 2007
At MRWED we are always looking for new training trends and below are some of the hottest for 2007:
Open Technologies
Even though Microsoft has just released its latest offering Vista, it seems the market share to independent software developers will continue to increase as they provide a range of credible, free application options. Developers like Open Office (www.openoffice.org) and Mozilla (www.mozilla.com) are leading the pack with presentation, word processing and web browsing options. Further to this, as there is no license fee many educational institutions are moving to these software solutions as a cost-saving measure.
Embedded learning
“Embedded learning” is not a new concept, but is one set to take 2007 by storm. Essentially, it is learning that is built into the work process and available at the time of need. Look for this as one of the new buzz words of the year.
Narrated e-learning
Reading is laborious on a computer and uses only one of the senses. Listening to a narrator with accompanying visuals is easier and more effective. With the increase of online content and the ease of accessing web-casting, narrated e-learning will be one of the major trends to complement traditional learning options in 2007.
MRWED News: New Centres and New Workshops
MRWED opens TAA Centres in Adelaide and Newcastle
MRWED kicked off the year with two new TAA Centres: One in Adelaide and the other in Newcastle. We are excited about this, as we are able to increase the resources and equipment available for students and setup the rooms in a purposeful way to support the learning in our Certificate IV programs.
Cert IV TAA classes in Adelaide will now be held at Level 7, 90 King William Street, Adelaide, located in the Bank of Adelaide Building. Additionally, Newcastle courses will now be held at Suite 1, Level 1 of the "Commercial Centre" of Market Square in the centrally located, Hunter Street Mall.
Presentation Skills Workshops
Due to the demand for specific workshops in presentation skills, we have developed 1 and 2 day options to support people wanting to hone their skills in front of an audience. Initially developed as workshops for our custom clients in 2006, we are now making them available for public clients in 2007. Our first public 1 day workshop will be held at our Brisbane TAA Centre on Tuesday the 24th of April 2007.
If you or your organisation is interested in obtaining more information on these workshops please contact our office on FREECALL 1800 2 TRAIN (1800 2 87246).
Training Tip: Getting the Students Back from Activities
One of the most common challenges for trainers is getting the group to refocus and return to their seats after an activity. Particularly when this activity is noisy or ends in lots of laughter. Here’s a tip: To get their attention and get them moving back to their seats, pick a brief, up-beat song. Every time they hear this tune, they'll know they have 30 seconds left before the session resumes. You will be surprised how effective this is… I tried it recently with some of the music from the Rocky movies and it was a standout… or is that knock out?

Training Game: Famous Person
This is a simple ice-breaker which encourages people to think and move around at the start of the day. How it works, is students write (or the trainer provides) a famous name on a piece of paper and this is then pinned on someone else's back. Students then try to guess what name is pinned on them by asking others around the room yes or no questions. You could conclude with a quote from each of the famous people as a link to the session. e.g. “Sometimes our best is not enough, we have to do what is required” – Winston Churchill. One variation could be to use a famous place instead of a famous person. Alternatively, you could use the activity as a type of revision for the day, by selecting key terms from the content. For example, “Am I made up of nationally recognised competency standards, assessment guidelines and Australian Qualification Framework qualifications”?... Yes, you are a “Training Package”.
