Training News: Good practice for voice technologies in e-learning
Teachers and trainers from around Australia can now access a new CD-ROM which outlines a ‘good practice’ model for incorporating voice technologies such as voice boards and pod-casting into the delivery of education and training.
Released by the national training system’s e-learning strategy, the 2005-2006 Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework), Different Voices Different Spaces is a collection of resources to help educators, trainers and their organisations understand voice technologies and how they can be effectively embedded into education and training.
The CD-ROM is based on the work, findings and resources developed during the course of three voice technology projects which were funded and supported by the Framework’s New Practices in Flexible Learning Project in 2005.
Different Voice Different Spaces is broken into four sections with two explaining the principles and guidelines of ‘good practice’ voice technology and the other two containing professional development resources and links to the three voice technology projects and their outcomes.

Editorial Note: It seems that despite the buzz, e-learning is not outpacing classroom learning. In fact classroom has remained constant. Numbers published in Training magazine (December 2005) indicate that classroom training remains high (approx. 70%), in terms of participation. It appears that an integrated approach which combines traditional classroom with e-learning is the emerging model for the vocational education and training sector.
MRWED News: New members join the MRWED team
MRWED is proud to announce the addition of Shelley Stefiuk and Bruce Buchanan to the training team and Rachael Adams to the Administration Team. Shelley hails from Calgary, Canada and now calls Australia home - which is good as she will be seeing a lot of it in her national training role. Bruce is based in Orange, NSW and will focus his attentions on the Newcastle area as well as regional New South Wales.
Rachael is the newest member of the Customer Relations team and has a double cause for celebration, as she is expecting her first child in November this year!
Training Tip: Dueling Powerpoint Screens
Seems our theme of technology extends to our question of the month from Alan from Sydney. "I'm using a laptop for my PowerPoint Presentation in my training. Is there any way to have the slides appear on one (separate) screen and have my notes appear on the laptop screen?"
The good news is YES, you can have a presenter view and student view with PowerPoint. There are few steps involved, but it's well worth the effort. We found an online tutorial from Friesen, Kaye and Associates (FKA) which could help you out. To see FKA's online tutorial visit www.fka.com/linktracker.asp?name=ppt
Website of the Month: brainybetty.com
Feel limited by the standard backgrounds found in Microsoft Powerpoint? Ever wanted to use some different types of slides? Well, to continue the powerpoint theme, this edition’s feature website highlights a place where you can get a range of backgrounds and clipart for free! This is an education-focused website, which has a lot of designs suitable for school contexts as well as vocational training purposes.
There is some advertising on the site which can be a little confusing. For best results check out the educators link at: www.brainybetty.com/MENUEducators.htm
Training Game: Group Grumble
I was reminded of this game recently, when a group asked for a game to release tension and anxiety.
I suggested this “group grumble game”. How it works, is you ask the students to write down something that is bothering them. It could be something in their life, work or even from within the training. (“the bus was late”, “my boss is too hard on me” etc.) Next, you ask the group to shout out their written words on the count of three. It becomes an unintelligible noise but it helps to release these feelings from the students. I usually encourage the group to do this two more times and ask for the intensity and volume to increase.
Give this a go! You will be surprised at how much it can help people to get negative feelings off their chest and assists the trainer in getting the students back on track mentally. It is a quick piece of group therapy!
Training Case Study: Hewlett-Packard/Compaq Mentoring Pays Off
Technology-based provider Hewlett-Packard/Compaq lets account reps learn from those who have walked the walk. Its sales excellence department matches account reps with successful sales veterans for coaching. In 2005, newly hired account reps improved by 18 percent in their quota attainment after the coaching sessions. Clearly a case of an old dog teaching a young dog new tricks!
